For over 120 years, the funicular has connected the center of Bergamo to the upper town, more precisely to the Mercato delle Scarpe square, which once hosted numerous commercial activities. In 1430, this square was used exclusively for the sale of shoes, while the palace opposite it, which today houses the funicular station, was the headquarters of the shoemakers' guild.
The city's funicular is a favorite with the people of Bergamo, who couldn't live without it: what other means of transport allows you to travel through history, crossing the ancient Venetian walls that once defended Bergamo from enemy attacks? Two graceful carriages ascend and descend amidst flower gardens and unique views: on a clear day, you can enjoy a fantastic panorama of the entire Po Valley and even glimpse the Apennines!
